Description
If I had to choose one restaurant to recommend for someone's first "serious" dinner in Krakow, Starka Restaurant in Kazimierz would be very high on the list. It's a place where locals come with their parents when they want to "show off Krakow," and tourists leave convinced that Polish cuisine is more than just pierogi and bigos.
Where is Starka's restaurant and what is its atmosphere?
Starka Restaurant is located at 14 Józefa Street, in the heart of Kazimierz – the historic Jewish district, today one of the most atmospheric parts of Krakow, full of bars, cafes, and galleries.
From the outside, Starka looks unassuming: red shutters, a "Restaurant & Vodkas" sign, and a few tables along the sidewalk. Inside, the cozy, atmospheric interior features brick, candles, and retro-style artwork, which is especially striking in the evening. It's more of an intimate, bustling "time capsule" than an elegant, white-tablecloth restaurant – perfect for a date, a get-together with friends, or a family dinner.
What to eat at Starka? Polish cuisine with character
The menu changes, but the core remains the same: solid Polish cuisine, refined but without any forced frills. Starka Restaurant is famous for, among other things:
- Mrs. Rysia's pierogi – in several versions: classic Russian, with spinach and bundz, with beef cheeks, or even with blood sausage. This is one of those sets that can easily be ordered "for the center of the table" to share.
- Kazimierz red borscht with croquettes – strong, aromatic, with hints of dried mushrooms and baked apple. Perfect for a cooler evening.
- Beef cheeks – soft, long-braised, often served with dumplings and vegetables; a classic that regularly returns in guest reviews.
- Classic desserts – e.g. warm apple pie with ice cream or chocolate cake, perfect to end dinner.
The portions are fair, and the cuisine is typical "comfort food": it's supposed to be tasty, home-cooked, and a bit like "an aunt who cooks with passion.".
Homemade liqueurs – Starka's true calling card
It's impossible to talk about a place like Starka's restaurant without mentioning their liqueurs. They're their biggest selling point: a wide selection of their own, flavored liqueurs, served in small glasses – perfect for a slow sip.
Flavors rotate, but you'll often find classics like:
- kirsch,
- quince,
- raspberry,
- spicy, more "winter" compositions.
This is a great option to show your foreign friends the "stronger" side of Polish tradition... in an elegant, refined form, not in the "just-in-time" version.
Who is Starka's restaurant for?
From a local guide's perspective, Starka is a bull's eye for:
- couples – cozy atmosphere, candles, intimate interiors;
- tourists looking for good Polish cuisine, but without the hotel-tourist vibe;
- small groups of friends – you can order several dishes and share them at the table;
- business guests – if you want to show the „real Krakow” and not just another anonymous place on the Market Square.
Starka also has special offers for groups, including set menus for larger reservations and events, which can be useful when organizing team-building dinners or corporate meetings.
Reservations, prices and practical tips
- Address: ul. Józefa 14, 31-056 Kraków (Kazimierz).
- Reservations required: I highly recommend it – the place is popular with both tourists and locals. During the season, it can get packed from early evening.
- Price range: approximately PLN 50 to PLN 150 per person for a full meal with drinks (appetizer + main course + dessert/liqueur).
- Vegetarian cuisine: the menu includes some sensible options (dumplings, vegetable dishes), although the core remains meat-based.
- Languages: the staff can handle English, the menu is also available in English.
How to get to Starka?
From the Main Market Square, you can walk here in about 15–20 minutes – just descend towards Wawel Castle, cross Dietl Street, and enter Kazimierz. Józefa Street is the district's backbone: after dinner, you're close to plenty of bars, wine bars, and atmospheric corners for an evening stroll.
If you are moving around the city by electric scooter, the area around Józefa / Plac Nowy is a great transfer point: it is close to both the Vistula River and back towards the Old Town.
Summary – is it worth it?
If you are looking for a place where:
- you will try Polish cuisine in a refined, but still "home-style" version,
- you will drink decent, homemade liqueurs,
- you will sit in the atmospheric interior of Kazimierz,
Starka Restaurant should be a must-see on your Krakow itinerary. It's a place that's regularly recommended by locals and guides alike—and it's exactly the kind of place we want to showcase to Cityglide guests.
