Krakow's Main Market Square is one of the largest and oldest market squares in Europe. Its history dates back to the 13th century, when it was designated as the central point of the city. Today it is a landmark of Krakow, a place of meetings, cultural events and one of the most picturesque places in Poland.<\/p>\n

Walking around the Market Square, you can't miss the Cloth Hall. It is one of the most characteristic buildings of Krakow. Originally they functioned as a marketplace where mainly cloth was traded (hence the name). Today they house a gallery of 19th-century Polish art as part of the National Museum, as well as charming stalls selling handicrafts, jewelry and souvenirs.<\/p>\n

On one side of the Cloth Hall stands the City Hall Tower - the only surviving part of the old City Hall. On the other side you'll find St. Mary's Basilica, famous for its altarpiece by Veit Stoss. Every hour the St. Mary's bugle call is played from the tower, which has become one of the symbols of the city.<\/p>\n

The Market Square is also a great place to sample traditional Polish cuisine. Around the square you'll find numerous restaurants and cafes where you'll enjoy obwarzanki (traditional Cracow pretzels), pierogies and Galician mulled wine.<\/p>\n

The square is also the center of cultural events - the St. John's Fair takes place here in the summer, and in winter one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe. For history buffs, we recommend the Underground Museum, which will take you back to medieval Krakow.<\/p>\n
