History and architecture
The Holy Trinity Church was built in the 17th century by the Trinitarian order, which was engaged in ransoming Christian captives from Muslim slavery. After the order was dissolved in 1783, the church was taken over by the Brothers of St. John of God, who expanded the hospital and pharmacy, which still operates today and is one of the oldest in Krakow.
The church displays late Baroque architecture with an ornate facade with pilasters and sculptures. Its interior is home to incredible artistic treasures:
- The illusionistic frescoes - painted by Jozef Piltz in the 18th century, depicting scenes from the life of St. Francis of Assisi.
- Main Altar - richly decorated, with an image of the Holy Trinity.
- The pulpit - a baroque masterpiece decorated with figures of angels.
Spirituality and worship of St.
The church has special significance as a shrine to St. John of God, founder of the Hospital Brothers and patron saint of the sick. In 2016, Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz officially established it as a shrine dedicated to St. John of God.
Every Thursday at 18:00 a special service is held in his honor, combined with adoration of his relics. This is followed at 6:30 p.m. by Mass with prayers for the sick and needy, and Eucharistic adoration continues until 9 p.m.
Holy Trinity Church - the hidden gem of Krakow
Despite being located in the heart of Kazimierz, this magnificent Baroque church remains largely undiscovered by tourists. It is an ideal place for quiet reflection and prayer, but also for admiring the magnificent 18th-century art.
